Fore! Disc Golf and Sugar Days!

Disc Golf, Anyone?

During last week's city council meeting, we heard a proposal from Dane Bowman for installing a disc golf course here in Sugar City. I took a photo of the current proposed course. The pin-looking icons are where the hole/baskets are. The dotted lines would indicate the walking between the tee pads. Some of the walking paths would have to be adjusted due to fencing, etc.

When a temporary course was laid out a few weeks ago, 40+ enthusiasts came to try it out. They offered feedback on the course. The baskets can be removed or relocated fairly easily if they need to be for some reason.

Disc golf is a growing sport, and it really exploded during the Covid restrictions. I think it would be good for the residents of Sugar City to have another great use for our parks. Individuals, families, church groups, and others would enjoy it, I'm sure. And, the course would undoubtedly attract others to visit our town and businesses.

The city has to decide if we can budget in the upfront cost of the course. Mr. Bowman is willing to work with the city to get the equipment at wholesale or close to wholesale cost. Once the course is in place, the maintenance cost is close to zero. The installation costs would probably run between $6,000 to $12,000, depending on the grade of baskets and the type of tee pads installed.

If anyone has thoughts or comments about a disc course, or if anyone is interested in donating or sponsoring the course or even a part of the course, please contact city hall.

New Local Businesses

There are new businesses going up in the Business Park. I will see if I can do a spotlight on them in an upcoming post. It will be good to get to know our newest businesses. By the number of cars I see in the drive-thru, I think most residents are aware of Fizz Bizz by this point.

Sugar Days! Saturday July 9th

The annual Community Breakfast and Sugar Days Celebration is quickly approaching. It is on the second Saturday of July each year, so that means July 9th this year. And, of course, we'll have the Community Talent Showcase and Dance.

We're also going to have a 3v3 soccer tournament. So if soccer is your thing, start planning now to participate.

The vendor spots will be a ridiculously low $20 again this year. If you need electricity they are $25. Please stop in city hall to reserve your booth spot. We had a lot of great vendors last year: food, crafts, information, etc.

Don't forget all of the free, great bounce houses and attractions for the kids!

We're looking for volunteers to help out on the day of the event: individuals, families, friends, school groups, etc.

Also, we're looking for sponsors again this year. If you have sponsored in the past, we hope we can count on you again this year.

If you want to get involved as a volunteer or sponsor, we're always in need of the support. Please contact city hall (208-356-7561) or me (gdayley@sugarcityidaho.gov).

FY 2026 Budget and Alcohol Ordinance

FY 2026 Budget The city council passed the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2026, which begins October 1st. (City budget fiscal years run from October to September.) It's a good budget, and I think the council and mayor are doing a good job keeping track of how our taxes and other public monies are being used. As normally happens, some fees were adjusted. (Of course, most of the time that means they went up when the government and businesses are talking.) The city has to hold public hearings for any fee increases above 5%. We only had one fee increase above 5% and it went up because of the increased cost of postage at the post office: the Paper Utility Statement fee went up to $1.09. The utility fee increases are listed below and compared with the fees from last year (or currently until October). Costs for maintenance, repairs, and capital projects demand that we increase fees each year to keep up with inflation and rising costs, overall.  None of us like utility fees to increas...

Public Information, Sewer Use Rate Increase, City Budgeting

Public Information Recently, I was happy to see that some people notice the announcements regarding youth soccer that I occasionally post on social media.☺ (I've volunteered for the past decade or so with a local organization.) I'm not always sure those announcements for Sugar Soccer are very effective. Of course, the real reason the soccer information was screen shot and reposted, was to demonstrate to residents of Sugar City how hard it might seem to be informed regarding topics and issues being discussed and acted upon by city council. I sympathize with residents who can sometimes feel caught off guard regarding some issues coming up in city council. The mayor, council members, and city staff spend hours each week staying as informed as we can be. Understanding a proposed ordinance, development application, zone change request, or budget item can take hours of discussion and research. Sometimes we have to hear from state and other local government entities. Sometimes we ha...

Merry Christmas 2025! Sunpro, 6th North, and property development

I enjoyed the lighting of the city Christmas lights once again this year! The city crew and Mayor Adams do a good job preparing and conducting the event each year. And, of course, everyone who helped transform city hall into the North Pole for Santa's visit! I think close to 200 kids visited with The Jolly Old Elf! And we thank the fire department for escorting Santa into town and Mrs. Vail's great children's chorus! Sunpro Store and Plant If you've driven on Hwy 33 to the Hwy 20 interchange, you couldn't have missed the new Sunpro commercial building that is nearing completion. The millwork and truss buildings are also coming along. This facility has the potential to bring some good quality jobs into our city. I will also be glad to see the new street, 6th North, get completed with sidewalks and all. Our old dog can't go on long walks like she used to, but I think once 6th North is completed, I will enjoy having a new place to walk, and I might see if she is ...
