Water Rights Mitigation Notice to the City Long story short: the city was notified by the powers that be (IDWR: Idaho Department of Water Resources) that some of our water rights would be restricted because of the ongoing and predicted water shortages this season. The council authorized the mayor to enter the city into an agreement with a coalition or cooperative of other cities who are working together to share rights so each city has what they need. This is a solid, precautionary fix to the issue. The long-term fix will involve Sugar City doing an evaluation of all of our water rights. We have a lot of surface rights we could use to our advantage more than we currently are, either through secondary irrigation systems (expensive) or through possible recharging of the aquifer to offset our ground water use (potentially not as expensive, and we could get a nice recharge site we could use for some water recreation--think Rigby Lake).
