Sugar City, Idaho: The Dayley Report

  City Budget Fiscal Year 2022-2023 The city council passed the budget for next fiscal year during our last meeting. We have been working on the budget for several months now, including the recent public hearing. The city is in good fiscal shape, overall. The mayor and city staff do a very good job juggling all the budgetary needs over the course of the year, and the city council works hard to pass a budget that is reasonable in its approach to meet all those needs. Costs are going up for the city just as they are for residents. We're all feeling the effects of inflation and the high cost of housing and gas and food, etc. We have to do a good job keeping our city priorities in line with our goal to be careful and frugal with the public's money. I think we do a very good job. City Disc Golf Course The council decided to set aside some of our parks budget this year to pay for a new disc golf course in the city.   New Sidewalks! After a lot of good work by city staff, we've been awarded a $250k Child Pedestrian Safety Grant from the state. In the image above, you can see the plans for the money. The solid blue and green lines show the existing sidewalks and walking paths. The solid orange lines show the planned sidewalks, and the kind of dotted orange line along 3rd South is a planned walking path.  Also, the black circles are where we currently have those flashing-light crosswalks, and the yellow circles are where we are planning to install new ones. All of these projects will be done by fall of 2023, but we are hoping to get some of them completed before snow flies this year, particularly the projects around the new intermediate school (jr. high). It's great to see the connectivity these new walkways will bring to the city. Sugar Days 2022 Thanks to our sponsors and volunteers for this year's Community Breakfast and Sugar Days Celebration! Special thinks to Stone's Toyota, Idaho Central Credit Union, The Jaggedge Salon, Mountain West Water Works, Fuzion Dance Studio, Broulims, and PSI for their generous donations. Sugar Days is a great community event: wonderful vendor and organization booths, good food, cold drinks, bull riding, bouncing, wall climbing, raffle prizes, sunshine, music, and I even saw a little two-steppin' going on at one point. The ICCU t-shirt cannon was busy all day--shot water bottles and foam balls as well! Joyce Cromar was recognized as the Citizen of the Year for her many years of dedicated service to the Cemetery District and the community at large.   Sugar Days: Sponsors, Vendors, and Volunteers Needed On Saturday, July 9th, we kick off our Sugar Days events with the annual Community Breakfast. This will be followed by a day of events and activities and vendors. We still need your help. We're looking for additional sponsors so the activities and games for the kids can remain free of charge. Also, now's the time for vendors to reserve their booth spot--only $20 or $25 if you need electricity. Please stop in or call city hall to reserve your spot today.  We have room for more volunteers as well. Please let us know if you are able to help with the various activities during the day.   Arbor Day The city's Tree and Beautification Committee once again did a wonderful job with the Arbor Day Celebration this past Friday. The wind was harsh, but the kids were great, and Neibaur Park got a great new tree. The winning pictures from the children's Arbor Day art contest will be displayed at city hall. Stop by and check them out. Sugar Days (July 9th) Sugar Days and the Community Breakfast is only two months away! Drop by city hall and reserve your vendor slot for only $20.   Disc Golf, Anyone? During last week's city council meeting, we heard a proposal from Dane Bowman for installing a disc golf course here in Sugar City. I took a photo of the current proposed course. The pin-looking icons are where the hole/baskets are. The dotted lines would indicate the walking between the tee pads. Some of the walking paths would have to be adjusted due to fencing, etc. When a temporary course was laid out a few weeks ago, 40+ enthusiasts came to try it out. They offered feedback on the course. The baskets can be removed or relocated fairly easily if they need to be for some reason. Disc golf is a growing sport, and it really exploded during the Covid restrictions. I think it would be good for the residents of Sugar City to have another great use for our parks. Individuals, families, church groups, and others would enjoy it, I'm sure. And, the course would undoubtedly attract others to visit our town and businesses. The city has to decide if we can budget in...

Legacy of Community Support The school district has placed the monument expressing appreciation to the Glenn and Dorothy Dalling family for their donation of the land for the new Sugar-Salem Middle School. This generous gift of land is an amazing example of community support from a family that has a long history of such acts. There are so many in our city who serve and engage and support. I appreciate everyone's good efforts to keep Sugar City a wonderful place to live. Easter Bunny Visits City Hall The Easter Bunny dropped in to city council meeting with eggs full of candy for everyone--lucky for those of us who were there! The Bunny also invited everyone to the Easter Egg hunt this Saturday (4/16) at 10am at Heritage Park. Come and enjoy the fun, no matter the weather!
